How Can I know Gen. 15:7,8

God is a covenant making and covenant keeping God. The Eternal Covenant he made with Abraham is everlasting to all his generations and is comprised of 3 categories of promises.

  • Promises concerning His people
  • Promises concerning His Land
  • Promises concerning the Messiah to all nations

The Introduction of the Covenant

The Lord said to Abram, “I brought you here from Ur in Chaldea, and I gave you this land.”Abram asked, Lord God, how can I know the land will be mine?” Gen. 15:7,8 CEV

Abram needed reassurance concerning the promise of land. To “show” him this supernatural profundity, God put Abram to “sleep”. Rabbis explain that God took Abram out of time and space and brought him into “eternity or timelessness”. In timelessness one can see the beginning and the end. Abram saw the matrix of the covenant that God made with Himself from the foundation of the world. He saw the future time when that same covenant would be actualized as God would supply the sacrificial lamb, Yeshua. He then saw beyond the cross of Calvary to the day when the Kingdom of God would manifest on the Earth. Included in this disclosure of God’s plan of redemption, equipping the saints was also the inclusion of the righteous in the nations and the healing of the whole Earth. Abram was also privy of the terrifying events that his later generations would have to endure as they would be scattered and oppressed in the nations, but God would remember to perform His covenant and bring his people back to the promised land and to Himself with great compassion.

Yeshua said “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” (John 8:56)

Abraham was looking forward to the city that has foundations. He was waiting for the city that God planned and built. Hebrews 11:10 NIRV

Oh, the great lengths God goes to show His servants His plans. Like Abram, ask God “How can I know Your promises for me”? As you search the scriptures He will open great mysteries in His Word. Ask for eyes to see! And a heart to know!
