The Almond Tree

SHOKED – a watch or performance

Jeremiah 1:12 11 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching (shoked) to see that my word is fulfilled.”

Shoked means to be on a watch or awake as an alert centurion on duty, ready to defend or strike; or as an actor in the wings ready to go out on stage.

Shoked is related to the Hebrew word sheked which means almond.

God uses a play on words taking the word sheked (almond) that Jeremiah declares and uses it idiomatically as shoked.

How does the almond tree relate to a watch or performance?

The budding of the almond tree actually coincides on the Jewish holiday called Tu B’shvat. It is the Almond trees of all trees that is first to bud flowers and bear fruit. God is saying that when the appointed times comes, just like the faithful almond tree He also will “perform” all of the prophecies of His plans and purposes revealed in His Word; The Torah, the Prophets and the Psalms.
