The seven churches represent real congregations at the time of John’s writing, but also reveal the spiritual conditions found throughout history within the various expressions of Christianity.
Yeshua calls His people to repent, overcome, prepare, and endure.
Ephesus — Right Doctrine Without First Love
They were discerning and faithful but lost the heart of the relationship. Doing the right things without love becomes obligatory religious activity.
They have fallen – and must repent and return.
Smyrna — Faithfulness Through Persecution and Death
They are encouraged not to fear suffering or laying their life down for Messiah. They are encouraged to trust and endure.
The first death is temporary; the second death has no power over them.
Pergamum — Compromise and Mixture
They tolerated false worship and spiritual compromise. They lived their life with double standards – acceptable to the world in behavior yet feeling the conviction of God’s Word. They practiced mixed forms of paganism – worship of angels, stars or men (saints) mixed in with what is holy. These must repent and remain faithful to the One True God.
The reward is the hidden manna (supernatural strength and sustenance) and the etched white stone that memorializes that one truly belongs to God – not another.
Thyatira — Good Works with Hidden Sin
They had love, service, and perseverance, yet at the same time tolerated and engaged in immorality (adultery, divorce and abortions)
Like the women caught in adultery, God calls them to repentance and to stop sinning.
Sardis — The Dead Church
They had reputation of doing great Christian acts but lacked spiritual life being dead in spirit. They looked spiritual but people just went through motions and did not live in true Spirit.
He calls them to reject the flesh and ask the Lord to take over – to be born again!
Philadelphia — The Faithful Witness
They kept His Word and did not deny His name.
They represent fortitude and faithful testimony. God promises to protect them through the distress that is coming upon the Earth but encourages them to endure and trust Him when it comes.
Laodicea — The Self-Sufficient Church
They were wealthy and resourceful – and full of pride. Ironically these who had it all were actually spiritually poor lacking in the fruit of the Spirit and the mind of Christ.
God disciplines those He loves to bring them into purity. May He never say “I never knew you”. He calls them to humility and repentance.
